It’s time for another attempt at the Tour Aotearoa. On a recent Facebook discussion I posted that my kit weighed in at 12.8 kg for the bike with tools etc. and that I had 5.2 kg of clothes and camping kit. I was asked to provide my gear list so here it is!
The bike:
- Specialized Diverge gravel bike with Di2
- Specialized Sawtooth tyres which proved great on the Kopiko for the sort of mixed road/gravel that the TofA has. I’m running a 42 at the front and 38 at the rear as that is the largest the bike will take.
- Shimano XTR PD-M9120 pedals with large surface area
- Cinch bottom bracket power meter
- Hunt front wheel with SON dynamo
- Profile design aero bars
- Sinewave beacon dynamo light
- Rear lights: NightRider USB, B&M Dynamo
- Garmin Varia RTL515 rear radar/light
The bags:
- Stealth custom handlebar bag with top (T) and bottom (B) compartments. The top stores raingear and the bottom cold weather clothes in a dry bag.
- Stealth custom frame bag. The left side has a top (TL) pocket for medical and other things not needed. The right side has two pockets. Top (TR) is food and things needed like lock and day bag; Bottom (BR) is for food and bulky items.
- Gastank is a Blackburn bag which has been adapted to have cables passing through from behind the stem. There is a 10,000 mAh TP battery pack which has pass through capability. The dynamo charges it and then cables go back out to the Garmin and also the Sinewave light override.
- Seat bag is a Porcelain Rocket which has a removable dry bag. It’s been modified with a Revelate mesh pocket bag on top, two feed bags on the side, and a bag underneath which holds my jandals.
Packing approach: This is based on experience that when I am really tired I don’t think straight so things need to be compartmentalized and easy to find.
- Cold weather clothes in dry bag in handlebar
- Sleeping/post ride gear in dry bag in seat bag
- Camping gear in seat bag
- Tools separated into two main bags: one in the Framebag (BR) with things I will need like tubes and lube; the second in a pocket inside the lid of the handlebar bag with things that are rarely needed (e.g. spare brake pads)
- My ratchet and small tools are in their own bag (Framebag TR)
- Electronics and cables are in their own bag (Framebag BR)
- Medicines and first aid gear in two separate bags
Here is how it looks for the Framebag with what goes in on each side.
